Yes, it’s almost that time of year again……HURRICANE SEASON! Since I moved down to the Texas Gulf Coast just 4 short years ago, hurricanes are a new thing to me. Paul is a little more experienced in this field, having had to evacuate a time or two since moving here in 1995.
Coming from the Cincinnati, Ohio area, I had lots of people exclaim “What about all those HURRICANES!?” when they heard the news of my relocation to the Gulf Coast. My philosophy has always been, “At least I have 3-4 days to get out of DODGE! “ I come from the land of Twisters, where more often than not, you have about 10 SECONDS to hit the basement! Tornado sirens won’t wake my sleepy behind at 2am so I am much happier knowing if a big storm is coming and getting the opportunity to pack up my kids, my pets and my family photos and get out while I can.
I will confess though, Hurricane Rita gave us a scare and I wasn’t prepared for that sense of foreboding. We had packed everything and got up at 6am to leave but saw the storm was moving North so we postponed. We waited a little longer and saw it was turning North even more so we decided to stay. I have video of us driving through town and so many stores and homes were boarded up. The local Walmart had police outside and employees were stacking bags of potting soil around the doors to stave off any possible flooding. It was surreal to say the least. Fortunately we were spared.
The potential for hurricanes is just a fact of life we here on the Texas Coast choose to live with. In my opinion there is always SOMETHING. If you don’t have hurricanes you have earthquakes or tornadoes or flooding of your rivers or 15 feet of snow or SOMETHING. I just appreciate the advanced notice of my natural disasters!
